What an incredible week it’s been over here at Rue! From launching Rue Daily to publishing our annual Small Spaces issue, we can’t thank you enough, dear loyal readers, for inspiring us each and every day to create more, seek new inspiration, and think innovatively.
While on the road putting together the contents of this new issue, I had the great pleasure of working side by side with so many of the talented contributors who make each new issue of Rue possible. In our conversations discussing what Small Spaces meant to them, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that most actually prefer living and decorating in tight quarters to expansive spaces. It’s the allure of a good space challenge, the warm and fuzzy feeling of a cozy abode, and the intimacy fostered when space is limited.
Lest you think that having a small spaces means sacraficing big style, we’re here to show you differently! Decorator Anthony Gianacakos makes a bold statement with moody walls in his Manhattan apartment, proving that dark can actually work to distract the eye from the size of the space. Mother-daughter duo, Caitlin Flemming and Julie Goebel take the opposite approach in San Francisco and opt for bright white walls and a muted color palettes for an equally stylish and effective look. Showing that dividing your home into designated areas to maximize function and space, Erin Hiemstra of Apartment 34 converts a section of her home into a new studio office. And of course, we couldn’t publish the issue without some entertaining inspiration for intimate gatherings. Plus, celebrity decorator Nathan Turner, sits down with Rue and gives us the inside scoop on his new shop, new book, and insight into what makes him tick.
