A Weekend on the Riviera

A Weekend on the Riviera

Despite growing up in the UK, I’ve spent very little time in ‘le sud de France’ up until now. If I’m honest, it’s always felt a little exclusive to me at times (in the literal sense, rather than the luxury sense) and potentially just a little too chic for someone who is far happier barefoot than blinged up. However last week I was lucky enough to go and check out the brand new Hotel Les Roches Rouges and I think I might be a riviera convert….

This perfect little slice of Slim Aarons-esque heaven is one of the most photogenic hotels I’ve ever been too. The fifties Modernist design of the hotel itself feels and looks like a Hockney piece while the neutral, perfectly curated interiors are off-set with flashes of colour through pieces of modern art, photography and coffee table books. Think tan butterfly chairs, woven pendant lights, Provencal ceramics, marble bathrooms and a copious amount of warm wood and terracotta walls. There’s an easy, French elegance and cool to the entire hotel without being in an way flashy or in your face. There are multiple little areas to curl up with a book or drink a glass of pink wine which always gets a huge tick from me; make sure you find time to play petanque, or boules as we say, with a grenadine and soda in your hand. The hotel overlooks the private island that inspired actual Tin Tin too; something about looking out over an island always feels even more relaxing and holiday mode-y. Don’t ask me why. f you’re looking for a weekend treat a mere two hours from London, this is it…

If you have longer than a couple of days and can rent a car, you’re not that far from Saint Paul de Vence and the famous Colombe D’Or restaurant, and pretty close to Cannes and St.Tropez if you want something a little more scene-y for the day. But really, two or three nights here is the ideal escape for some sun, French fare, great contemporary cocktails (a rareity in France) and not much else. We spent the majority of our time lining one of the two pools, braving a dip in the sea and lazing around chatting in the aformentioned nooks. There’s kayaks, paddleboards and local market town Frejus if you want to get further afield but really, I was tres happy lounging around with a book all day. Worth noting that the bed at Hotel Les Roches Rouges was one of the comfiest I’ve ever slept in in a hotel, up there with The Bowery, The Ludlow and Cuixmala.

All in all, a pretty dreamy new opening that’s ideal for a little (or long) break. When we were there, there was a real mix of young families, couples of all ages and us, a big group of girls, so there’s a nice mix of people that stop it from being in anyway stuffy or too cool for school. There’s a real laidback charm to this place; one of those places that puts you in holiday mode as soon as step out onto your balcony and get a whiff of that sea breeze….
