A Room of One’s Own

A Room of One’s Own
Parachute Bedding & Bath

When I moved from Missouri to New York (to be the editorial assistant for Cup of Jo), I arrived to an empty bedroom with only a single suitcase. I decided to leave behind my bulky furniture (I miss you, dear green couch) and old bed and bath linens. It was my Mary Tyler Moore moment, and I wanted it to feel like a new beginning…

For the first few nights I slept on an air mattress, figuring out what to do next. I live with two roommates, so I was hoping my bedroom would feel like a sanctuary — a place for my introverted self to unwind after a long day in the city. I also wanted to keep things simple, with a fluffy bed and artwork that reminded me of my family.

When I needed bedding, I asked the girls at work for a recommendation. One of their favorites was Parachute, a home essentials brand that works directly with the best manufacturers in Europe, so they can offer beautiful pieces without the higher price tag. They’re known for their modern aesthetic and thoughtful details – for example, their pillowcases have a back envelope closure instead of the traditional side opening (goodbye, messy fabric!).

Parachute has pretty percale and sateen bedding, but I went with the Linen Venice Set in “Fog.” The sheets are so soft and airy, I actually raved to my roommates the next morning that I hadn’t woken up once all night (unprecedented).

As with any big move, there have been bouts of stress and homesickness. There are days when FaceTime isn’t enough, and I wish I could close my eyes and be back on my parent’s front porch swing, with everything exactly how it was before I left. Then there are days when I turn on Paul Simon’s Graceland as I walk around Brooklyn and think, “How did I get this lucky?” A couple weeks ago, my roommate Lynsey nudged me with a smirk after I said “home,” while referring to our apartment. For the first time, the title finally fit.

I’m such a fan of Parachute that I’m psyched to help spread the word about their bath collection, which launches today. The towels are loomed from 100% long-staple Turkish cotton, so they are incredibly soft, while still absorbent and durable. And, like the bedding, they come at an accessible price. The collection features washcloths, hand towels, bath towels, and, if you really want to go wild, bath sheets that are 66% bigger than the bath towels. Our little bathroom stool has never looked lovelier.

Thank you so much, Parachute! See their full collection here.
